Well, the questions about e-mail, SPAM, and cyber-security just keep pouring in.  I consider that to be a good thing, as it means some of the most important issues that computer users face today are in the forefront of your concerns.  I want to thank everyone who keeps writing in, but so many of you have such similar questions I’m going to simply handle them en masse rather than risk leaving someone out.  Sorry if you were hoping to see your name published, but I can’t put everyone in the column.

I’ve received several e-mails regarding removing the e-mail addresses from forwarded e-mails.  Some of you seem to be having a hard time understanding how to remove the stale addresses of the person who sent it to you, and everyone to whom the mail was forwarded before you received it.  I believe part of the confusion is that you must click “Forward” first, and THEN remove the e-mail addresses – you cannot edit an e-mail that has been sent to you unless you’re re-sending it.  The e-mail address information you want to delete is automatically placed in the body of the forwarded mail – there’s not really a way to stop that from happening.  However, you have the ability to edit and delete anything that’s in the body of the message, including the stale addresses.  Just select them with your mouse or keyboard and hit “Del” or “Backspace” to delete the selected text.  That having been said, at least one of the e-mails that I received was from a reader who uses AOL, and I don’t know what oddities AOL foists on you that may include not being able to edit or remove the stale address information, but it works properly on the various types of web-based e-mail I use, including Gmail, and it works in both Outlook and Outlook Express.  Another reader said that when he forwards e-mails with attachments, the attachments don’t forward.  That is probably a setting in your mail reader’s configuration.  If it turns out that your reader doesn’t support that, simply save the attachment to your local hard drive before clicking “Forward”, then re-attach it to the forwarded e-mail before clicking “Send”.

The other topic that dominated this week’s e-mail had to do with a link in last week’s column.  Those of you who wrote in to say that it wasn’t working are absolutely correct.  Like all the links I use in my column, I tested it before publishing it.  Unfortunately, Malwarebytes seems to have discontinued the RogueRemover product sometime between when I wrote the column, and it was published.  Upon investigating, I discovered that the product has actually been incorporated into Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware product, which is available in both a free and purchased version.  The purchase price of $24.95 seems quite reasonable considering what you get, and even the free version will suffice for those who feel they can get along without real-time scanning.  The URL (again, tested, and working as I write this) is www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php.  Look for the two buttons that say “Download Free Version” and “Purchase Full Version” and choose what’s right for you.
