Q: Please help. How do I get rid of this? It started coming through my e-mail. It states TXCONNECT ALERT. Cannot unsubscribe to this or reply to them to tell whomever to remove me from mailing list. Thanks for your help. Did you play football? You look like a football player. Dallas Cowboys could use you.
– Ruben R.
Odessa, Texas
A: Drawing on my awesome powers of Google-Fu, I did a little research for you, Ruben. The following information comes directly from the “txConnect Training Guide” published by the Texas Computer Cooperative: “The parent portal application, txConnect, provides parents and guardians Web access to school-related information about their students including grades and attendance. It works in conjunction with txGradebook. Parents can access txConnect from anywhere with an Internet connection.” Regarding “Alerts” the same guide says: “Alerts are messages notifying a parent that his student has grades or attendance information of which he should be aware. When a parent creates a txConnect account, he is automatically subscribed to two alerts: Unexcused absence alerts, first occurrence of the day, and Failing grade alerts.” So it looks to me like this problem has several causes:
- You have a student enrolled in a public school in the state of Texas,
- You signed up to receive alerts when your student’s performance needs your attention, and
- Your student’s performance needs your attention.
I’m afraid I can’t really help you with any of those. As for the Cowboys, I’d be happy to entertain any offer they’d like to make. Feel free to pass my contact information along to them.
Q: Is there a linux free os that recognizes windows commands? Am using ubutu, like it, but having problems with windows files, cannot sync new iPhone.
– Sam M.
Plano, Texas
A: I am not the most Linux savvy person in the world, but I am a Geek after all, and versed in the ways of such things. Each operating system’s rules, commands, and fundamental core are unique, and most things (commands, files, programs, etc) will not cross-talk without a great deal of assistance. There is an abundance of information available online on both on how to sync an iPhone under Ubuntu, and how to run Windows-compatible programs under Ubuntu. Are you using WINE? (That’s WINdows Emulator, not the beverage). If not, seems like that’s probably your first problem. Beyond that, you need a good Ubuntu chat group. There are hundreds of them out there just filled with Geeks waiting for questions like this.
Q: I got a nasty program telling me my computer had viruses click here to fix etc. It shut down my McAfee anti virus program and wouldn’t let it start no matter what I tried. Did I miss a trick which would allow me to start the McAfee and scan my computer?
– Tony R.
Niceville, Florida
A: The only trick you missed, Tony, is when this Trojan Horse malware popped-up a legitimate looking Window telling you that your PC has viruses everywhere that need to be fixed, and you clicked on it. By doing so, you triggered the installation of a vicious piece of software that disabled your real antivirus scanner and probably is now flagging anything and everything you attempt to open as a virus. You’re not the first person to be caught by this trap, so there are solutions available. Like any good cure, the solution is going to be specific to the infection, so you’ll need to know a little more about what’s plaguing your system. If you can send me a couple of screen captures that show the software in action I might be able to guide you. Or, if you’re a do-it-yourself Geek, do a Google search on the name that the software displays (for example, there’s one that’s called “AntiVirus 2011”).
